Tire pressure should ideally be measured when the tires are cold. Driving heats the tires and raises the pressure, which may produce a higher reading.
For the most accurate result, check the tires before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. If you must add air to a warm tire during a roadside situation, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and recheck the pressure after the tires have cooled.
3. Prepare the Inflator
Place the inflator on a stable surface close enough for the air hose to reach the tire valve. Avoid placing it in standing water, mud, loose sand, or directly in an active traffic lane.
Check that the hose, electrical cord, plug, battery, and connectors are in good condition. Do not use equipment with exposed wires, damaged insulation, cracked fittings, or excessive corrosion.

8. Stop at the Correct Pressure
An automatic inflator should stop when it reaches the preset pressure. If your model does not shut off automatically, switch it off as soon as the gauge reaches the recommended PSI.
Do not intentionally overinflate the tire. Too much air can reduce ride comfort, alter handling, contribute to uneven tread wear, and increase the possibility of tire damage.
If you accidentally add too much air, use the recommended pressure-release method and measure again. Never remove air from a hot tire merely to match the vehicle’s cold-pressure specification.
9. Disconnect and Recheck
Turn off the inflator before disconnecting the hose. Carefully remove the connector because the hose or fitting may be hot.
Use a separate, reliable tire-pressure gauge to confirm the final pressure when possible. Add or release small amounts of air until the reading matches the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation.
Inspect the valve for continued air leakage, then reinstall the valve cap securely. Store the hose, cord, and accessories only after the inflator has cooled.
10. Check the Other Tires
One low tire may be an isolated problem, but temperature changes can affect all four tires. Check the remaining tires and the spare tire if your vehicle has one.
If the Tire Pressure Monitoring System light remains on after correcting the pressure, consult the vehicle owner’s manual. Some vehicles update automatically, while others may require driving for a short distance or completing a reset procedure.
When You Should Not Use a Tire Inflator
A portable inflator is useful for routine pressure adjustments and certain slow leaks. It is not a repair tool for every tire problem.
Do not rely on an inflator when:
- The tire has a bulge, deep cut, exposed cord, or serious sidewall damage
- The tire has separated from the wheel rim
- The wheel or valve stem is visibly damaged
- The tire loses air as quickly as it is added
- The tire was driven extensively while completely flat
- The inflator, hose, plug, or electrical cord is damaged
- The vehicle is positioned where working near it would be unsafe
In these situations, install a usable spare tire if you can do so safely or contact roadside assistance.
